My favourite ever film is ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ (1976) and so when the ‘Party Like It’s 1976’ theme was announced for Triple R’s 30th birthday at The Forum, I was always going as Chief, played by the late, great Will Sampson. It was a terrific night. Sam, Fee and I were judges of the fancy dress competition, which started off as a ‘Saturday Night Fever’, when-you’re-tapped-you’re-out type of affair, until MC Brian Nankervis worked out that it’s easier to pick three than eliminate 297. I chose Wonder Woman with my vote. It’s what the Chief would have done. Fee came as Hot Lips Hoolihan. Sam came as Gabe Cotter from ‘Welcome Back Cotter’ although most agreed that he looked more like the Asian Einstein.
Former Breakfaster Angus Sampson came as Ugly Dave Gray and told me that the author of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey, never saw the film because he was angry that it wasn’t narrated from the Chief’s point of view. Apparently he once stumbled across it in a hotel room and watched it for a bit before he realised it was his book and had to angrily turn it off. This was a great fact from the other Sampson, as was his other stat about Will Sampson dying during heart surgery after filming Poltergeist II – The Other Side, one of four people involved with the Poltergeist movies to suffer unusual deaths. http://imdb.com/name/nm0760225/bio My response to Angus on the night … ‘Mmmmm, juicy fruit’.
Subscribers can buy the book for the special price of $30. http://rrr.org.au/news.php?nid=29
