For four years, I’ve been a part of the Breakfasters on Triple R (102.7 FM). Triple R is a jewel in the Melbourne cultural landscape, supported by more than 10,000 subscribers who put up their hard-earned to ensure there’s at least one station on the air that’s not giving away mobile phones.

Radiothon 007

It’s Radiothon time again, and this year, the theme is martinis, espionage, car chases, gadgets and anything else from the Bond films that is appropriate in a community radio context — we’re right now seeing what we can do with the sixties misogyny and product placement.

Triple R is virtually without government funding, and we rely on subscriptions to stay alive. The best way to subscribe is to pick up the shoe-phone and call the station on (03) 9388 1027. I’m aware that the shoe-phone is much more ‘Get Smart’ than it is James Bond, and I guess that’s why I’m on this website asking you to support an important Melbourne radio institution, rather than earning the big bucks at Saatchi & Saatchi, where the focus groups would have knocked back ‘shoe-phone’ in an instant.

To subscribe by post, go through the Triple R homepage at www.rrr.org.au
